M. Problem Points in the Operation Environment
Technological Advancements are not enough to replace the flight engineer when adequate
measures have not been taken to establish"Absolute Safety" ("Absolute
Safety" is a policy of Japan Air Lines). The following problems must be encountered
and solved.
-Increase in air traffic volume
-ATC problems (flights using HF, in a nonJEngligh speaking environment or where the
English speaking ability is poor, where VHF communication is inadequate, etc.)
-Problems in time zone differences and night flights (measures to cope with the human
physiology are inadequate)
-Problems in the operating environment of developing nations
-Problems in weather (inadequacies of weather forecasting, measures to cope with volcanic
eruptions, microbursts, severe turbulance, icing, lightning strikes, etc.)
-Problems arising from aircraft maintenance (lack of personnel, the sample checking
method, complexities arising from the black boxing of systems, etc.)
